music label iparticipate10

Ben Browning

The music label that I'm choosing to cover is def jam records.  It is a well known rap music label.  A lot of famous rappers have come out of this label and it is still on the rise.  Def jam is not the biggest rap label in the game but it is still on the rise.  Def jam is mostly rap but will also cover R&B, hip hop, and even some pop.  Kayne, Jay Z, Rhianna, and Frank Ocean are just some of the big names that has came from def jam.

Def jam does target a specific audience.  They target an audience that appreciates rap and hip hop, they don't cover any other type of music and this is why they are so successful because they know what they're good at and they stick to it.  This company is independent because of how large it is, it has smaller companies apart of it.

The problem with def jam is the same problem as every other music label company in the world.  The problem with pandora, apple music, spotify, and others.  These companies are ruining the main label companies because people are no longer buying cd's or even albums.  This is how label companies make their money and these other companies are taking that away from them.

Def jam is still relevant and a big label company but i believe that this company is on its downfall.  I believe in about 5 years all label companies will be dead.  In the mean time this is a big label and makes a big impact on the music industry.

Images in Magazines iparticipate9

Ben Browning

A magazine that I often read is Sports Illustrated.  Images in this magazine are often happy sports images or sad images of a team losing.  Today on Sports Illustrated there are a lot of great images.  Their head story is about a NFL kicker who has just been charged with abusing his wife.  The image on that story is a picture of the kicker looking shocked and scared.  Its a powerful image.  The rest of the images are pictures of teams celebrated or playing a sport of some kind.  The good thing about these images is that there are a lot of diversity in these images.  Sports have a lot of diversity an Sport Illustrated always captures that.

The images on Sports Illustrated capture the diverse people that play these sports but it does not have diverse images.  Sports Illustrated is all about sports so that is what most of the pictures are of.  This magazine doesn't capture a diverse audience because it is mostly about sports.  If someone is not interested in sports then they would not be reading Sports Illustrated.

It is obvious that the editors are appealing for a sports audience because that is what this magazine is about.  If you look deeper than that then you can tell the editors are mostly appealing to the football fans in the sports world.  For example, the post season of baseball is happening right now and their main stories are about football.  Majority of the time in this magazine the main stories are about football even when football season isn't even going on.

I would say that there is some disconnect between the magazine and their audience because they only talk about sports.  Although this really isn't fair to say because it is a sports magazine after all.  They can't start covering world issues because that is not why people read this magazine they read this magazine to get away for a little bit to receive some pleasant news.

How people get their news iparticipate7

Ben Browning

Over the break I was lucky enough to see my parents and grandparents, who are perfect to interview over this weeks topic.  I have came to the conclusion that my grandparents are more effected by television than my parents.  This is because they haven't always had television.  When they were kids they would get their news from the radio.  Now that they have T.V. my grandma gets her news from CNN and my grandpa gets his news from FOX News.  Both of my parents get their news from CNN and local news stations.  Unlike my grandparents my parents also have certain apps they can get their news from.

The T.V. news experience that both my grandparents and parents remember the most is 9/11.  They said they remember this so well because all they did was watch T.V. for hour and hours when 9/11 happened.  They said they're other moments on television that they remember but none as vivid and intense as 9/11.

My parents watch a lot of T.V. but not as much as my grandparents.  This is because my parents now have other ways to receive their news.  My grandparents do not have apps like my parents do to get their news.  Receiving their news from T.V. is still my parents favorite way to get their news because they feel they can connect to the event on a personal level because they are watching it and they have someone telling them what happened.  This is something they cant get on an app.

Both my parents and grandparents think that cable T.V. news is better than regular station news because of the quality and they feel that the anchors are better.  My parents have totally stop reading and receiving news papers.  My grandparents still get news papers but they barely read them.  They both prefer cable T.V. news over any other way to get news.

Magazines and advertising iparticipate6

Ben Browning

Everyone knows that you cant read a magazine without seeing some ads.  The difference is what magazine you read.  It's pretty obvious that there are different ads with certain magazines.  For example; you read People magazine you see ads for beauty merchandise like make up, skin clear, and others.  You read Sports Illustrated there are ads for sport equipment, Dicks sporting goods, and even ads for gym memberships.

It's kinda amazing how related the ads are to the story you read in those magazines.  I read a story in People magazine about how Angelina Jolie is breaking out, and the next page there was an ad for proactive skin care.  These companies place their ads perfectly so they can get the consumer thinking more and really focus on buying their product.  The consumer does this without even realizing it most of the time.  It's all in the consumers subconscious.

I don't believe there is much of a firewall.  Most of the time these ads are so closely related to the story by the editor the I think it gets the consumer thinking even more about the story they just read.  With that being said there are some moments where the ad doesn't really have much to do with the story which could throw the reader for a loop.  In that case if I was the editor I wouldn't be too pleased with the ad.  With that being said I believe the editor shouldn't have a problem with the ad as long as it has to do somewhat with the story they wrote.

Yes I believe there can be a balance between ads and the stories the editor publishes.  Like I said as long as the ad has to do with the story I don't see why it would be a problem.  If the ad doesn't have to do with the story then don't run the ad.  If they stick with that then I believe it will be a perfect balance between the two.

Foreigners In American Made Films: Iparticipate 5

Ben Browning

American films can sometimes be offensive to the foreigners in the films.  Sometimes it gives foreigners a good name in films.  It all depends on the film and what kind of movie it is.  For example, in war movies we see foreigners as enemies because they were during that time.  When people see those movies they automatically think that those type of foreigners are bad people.  We stereotype when we see movies.  in other movies such as slumdog millionaire and Rush Hour 2, that take place in a foreign country, we can somewhat relate to them because we see how they live.

As I said before war movies such as Lone Survivor makes the audience hate the foreigners in the film but because they are enemies at that time.  Just because they are enemies in that movie does not mean that all of their people are like that.  Later on in that movie the main character receives help from some local foreigners.  I enjoy this part of the movie because it shows that everyone in that area are not bad people.  As I said before when American made films take place in other countries it shows how they live and how foreigners are not much different then us Americans.

I do not think the foreigners skin color or anything of that matter make a difference on how we picture them in movies.  I believe it all matters on how the movie portrays the foreign characters.  Just like a foreign love interest is exotic and a foreign leader can be intimidating and cause the audience not to like that specific character.  Yes some movies portray foreign characters as bad people but that does not mean that all foreign character of that nationality are bad people.

I believe that a lot of  American movies show us foreigners as us Americans see them.  Which is not right, but the film makers do this for the film.  The audience members need to look pas this and understand that it is just a movie and it is not like that in real life.  Some films show a positive side of foreign countries.

Ownership in Radio

Ben Browning iparticipate 4

I listen to the radio quite often because I am a delivery driver.  So you could say that this iparticipate caught mu attention.  My favorite radio stations are 101.1, 100.7, 104.5, and a couple of others.  I found it fascinating that Direct T.V. owns all these radio stations.  Not only does Direct T.V. own those radio stations but they own almost all the radio stations in Bowling Green and probably a lot more throughout the country.

I have noticed that there are a lot of country radio stations in Bowling Green, which doesn't surprise me because country is most likely the most popular type of music in this area.  I have also noticed that there are no rap stations or "urban" stations, as my list calls it, in this area.  That's probably because not that many people listen to that type of music in this area.  Which is good for that one rap station because everybody who wants to listen to rap will tune into that station.

These radio stations do not show much diversity.  There are about 10 country stations before there is one rap station.  That is not diversity.  They do have a rap station and a rock station but not too many.  This is diversity but not the best that it can be.  Now this necessarily is not a bad thing.  If you're a radio company then obviously your going to want to play country because that is what most people listen to in the area.  So you can blame the radio stations for lack of diversity.  You can blame the citizens in the area.

I believe that there are some new developments to radio that can help improve radio, such as siri radio.  this radio gives better quality and gives you a more wide range amount of radio stations.  Siri radio can give you 20 rap stations and 20 country stations.  I know a lot of people who use this and love it.

BG Daily News

Ben Browning, Iparticipate 3

The BG Daily News is the local newspaper company in Bowling Green.  Their newspapers are not doing too great but they are not doing too bad either.  A lot of people still read the newspaper in Bowling Green, mostly old people, but they still get decent business.  Their website is up to date and very easy to get information and understand.  Its obvious that they get most of their income from adds.  While on the newspapers they have a lot of local adds.  On their website they have a lot of nation wide, big company adds.

It seems that the people of Bowling Green are a big fan of the sports section in the paper.  Especially the local sports, like their high schools.  I have found out that they discuss high school sports in their paper more than they discuss WKU sports team.  I find this interesting because WKU sports are pretty big and WKU is really good at sports.

In the BG Daily News they talk about the local court system and the local sports quite a bit.  They do not really discuss WKU that much at all.  Obviously if something important happened on campus then it would be a big section in the paper, but if nothing important is happening at WKU then the paper does not talk about it.

Overall I am impressed with the BG Daily News.  Their website is impressive with how updated it is.  I think their website is what is keeping them in business.  I do wish that they talked about WKU more because I feel that the citizens of Bowling Green would like more information about WKU.
